Perfect Moment

I recently wrote a post about experiencing, capturing and presenting the perfect moment on my blog. I am using a shot from Hawk Dreaming, Kakadu National Park as an example, Hawk Dreaming is a closed off part of Kakadu and one of the most magical of destinations in Australia. Click to read story.

Lets do it for the earth

Stitched image from earth hour last year, taken from south perth

Stitched image from earth hour last year, taken from south perth

Earth hour begins in just over 23 days. For one hour around the world, people are asked to turn off their lights. This year, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote.

In Perth, earth hour will begin at 8:30PM on Saturday 28 March 2009.

I’m not sure how Perth did last year, I think they made a good effort, but there sure were a lot of light on in the city. When I sent the above photo to my friends, they all replied back “I thought the lights were supposed to be turned off”. I hope the council decides to turn off more street lights.

I will be switching off my lights and going to take a photo from South Perth again for this year. Anyone else that shoots at this time

And Flemming, I’d like to see how your city looks if they are participating.

A new direction

I am having real trouble with B&W photos. I can’t get what I want and I think more importantly can’t visualise what I want. I have been looking at lots of B&W photographers for inspiriation, but somethings not clicking.

Colour is easy compared to B&W. I can process colour photos all day long and get the outcome I want, but I don’t know what it is with B&W, but I’m just not getting it.

Does anyone know of any good resources for advances B&W, not just the generic here’s an image, use the channel mixer etc, etc.

Confessions of a stitcher

Hi All,

I haven`t posted much on this blog as I have been a bit preoccupied with other stuff at the moment, but as we are all learning and trying to improve, I thought I would post about my process and hopefully get feedback on how everyone handles there files, as I would love to know if I am wasting time and space on my hard drives.

So yes I`m a stittcher and about 98% of what I shoot  are images that get stitched together, and heres how I do it. Obviously I go out and shoot, I usually don`t have anything in mind until I get to my chosen location and set up. I still use a panoramic head so I pan the scene and decide how many rows and what angle and then how many images I need to capture the scene, usually for a nice panoramic cropped image with the equipment I use is 2 rows of 8 images. Once the images are taken I go home and download the my computer, it is setup so that the images get saved into Adobe Bridge. At the download stage I add basic metadata and save them to a folder 03_02_Perth (MM_DD_Location), which is a sub folder of 2009_Panoramics, the images are also converted to DNG and are not deleted from my memory card usually until the next shoot so they are safely backed up to 2 different locations. I then open up the file with images and create new folders in order of how they were shot and how many images are in the folder (Stitch_1(16)), I then select all the images from 1 folder at a time and open them in Camera Raw, make some subtle changes if required to all images (white balance and exposure) and convert to tiff. The tiff files are opened in PT Gui and stitched together, I always save the stitch to my desktop as a tiff. The stitched image is then opened in photoshop and make some changes as adjustment layers (levels, curves and saturation), it is then saved as a layers file, I then flatten the image so I can crop it and also check for dust spots, it is then saved as a flattened file. So by now in my folder – Stitch_1(16) I have 16 images, 1 Master, 1 Layers and 1 Flat image. I know add more metadata – keywords, location and title, I add title because if I use the image on my website it would be changed to a 6 digit code (PER106) and in 5 years time I would be able to go back and find it. Once all images are stitched from the shoot they are backed up to an external hard drive and burned to a DVD.

My issues are 1 stitch takes up about 2.5gb and am I making changes in the correct order. Technology and programs change and get updated so quickly, how does everyone adapt as this costs more money and time, does everyone just do what is comfortable and works for them? I know changes in Photoshop are personal but 1 book gives instructions to do it 1 way and another book says to do it this way. I guess in some ways I am asking for help as I don`t want to be left behind and he does not ask does not learn.

Michael

Landscape Photography – the art of waiting!

I recently wrote a travel story about driving to Purnululu in Kimberley, Western Australian trying to get there in time for the sunset. The story is really about the art of waiting, a key to great landscape photography. I am restless and impatient so the art of waiting doesn’t come easy to me! The weather!!!

Has anyone else noticed the weather to be very different this year? I have certainly wondered what is going on and how much of this is global warming.

In the past summer has been pretty predictable. Really sunny, clear skys, warm dry heat, the temperature heats up into February and then starts to cool down in March. The warm easterly wind off the desert blows in the morning and the southerly wind, locally known as the Fremantle doctor, comes in to cool everything off in the afternoon.

But this year is different. Its almost like tropical weather. We are getting a lot more humidity in the air and we have really intense hot days followed by a break in the weather, some clouds and rain or almost rain. Its like we are getting a bunch of mini build ups that seem to come and go every couple of weeks.

So whats the point you ask? Well I slept in this morning and when I woke up, I thought “crap, I’m going to be too late” but when I looked outside it was dark. The sky was covered in cloud, it probably still is now. Anyone who likes to get out and take landscape photos, loves cloud because it adds some focus to the sky. So all these changes in the weather make for some interesting scenes for landscape photographers.

Heres a couple of shots from this morning.

Don’t know if I’ll go out, but if the clouds stay around tonight, there may be a good sunset tonight. The last two nights have been fantastic but I’ve been doing other things.

Attadale Foreshore

attadalejpg

I had arranged to meet Neal from Spool Photography at Burke Drive in Bicton for an afternoon shoot on Friday afternoon, however it was not to be due our timings.   Whilst standing at Burke Drive I couldn’t help but feel that it was going to be a decent sunset but that I was in the wrong place.   Does anyone else get a ‘feeling’ about these things?    I decided I would head over to Attadale instead and I had given up shooting the sunset as I didn’t think I would arrive there on time to capture it.  I must admit I was extremely surprised and pleased when I turned up to see this beautiful sunset appear in front of me.    It gets so frustrating to go out weeks on end only to come home with nothing, so this made a fantastic change.

Did anyone else manage to capture this sunset on Friday evening?

On another note, Tony Middleton has written an extremely poignant post about what is happening with the bush fires in Victoria.   My heart is certainly with the people in Victoria.
